Interactive Watershed Model
Grades 4 - 6

45-minute presentation
Using satellite imagery, maps and an innovative, interactive watershed model, students will learn about the Great Lakes watersheds and the importance and meaning of their “watershed address”. Students will explore topics of surface runoff, runoff pollution, point and non-point source pollution, water flow and land use through this engaging demonstration.

Where Does the Rain Drain? Watershed Lesson Series
Grades 5 – 7
October – April
Four – Six In-Classroom Sessions, Action Project and Field Experience
In this lesson series, a BUOE educator visits your classroom every two weeks for one class period per session. At the conclusion of these sessions, your class will engage in a Science Afloat! program on the Spirit of Buffalo. Lessons are derived from nationally-recognized Project WET, WILD Aquatic, Great Lakes in My World, ESCAPE and other curricula to form a comprehensive series of lessons in Great Lakes watershed education. Each lesson introduces and explores a different topic through visuals, maps, data, statistics and hands-on activity and prepare students for their field experience. Lessons include, but are not limited to, the following:
- AquaWords (Water and Literacy)
- Watersheds
- Freshwater Quantity and Scarcity
- Great Lakes Water Cycle
- Storm Water Runoff
- Action Project
Teachers/administrators may chose a variety of program formats that work for their schedule and programs may be booked for school or after-school hours. You may book 1 – 6 sessions with our educators to prepare for student’s field trip on the Spirit of Buffalo.
