Seasonal Educator/Deckhand

Part-Time (10-15 hours per week)

Buffalo Urban Outdoor Education is an educational non-profit organization that offers hands-on environment-based education programs on the 73’ schooner Spirit of Buffalo. The mission of BUOE is to broaden the horizons of Western New York youth – particularly at-risk youth – through hands-on science, history and personal development programs in the Lake Erie watershed, while supporting the positive development of the Buffalo waterfront.

We are seeking a seasonal educator to teach youth ages 8-18 in our unique, hands-on environmental education curriculum. Teaching/education and/or sailing experience is a plus but not a requirement. We will provide necessary training in curriculum, teaching methods and deck operations, as needed.

Please see the following requirements:

  • Applicant must have a keen interest/passion for working with youth and delivering and interpreting new material and experiences for youth.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old and must hold a high school diploma.
  • Applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and be part of a random drug-testing program.
  • Applicant must be tolerant of working outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, sun, rain, wind).
  • Applicant must be physically able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Background/experience in teaching, environmental education, environmental science, sailing, sail education and/or working with youth is a plus.

Our program season is from May 4 – October 1. Education programs run during the day Monday – Friday (days and times vary). Additional crew opportunities may exist for the right candidate.

This is a great opportunity to work with one of Buffalo’s most unique companies, outdoors with children and in the exciting field of environment-based education!
